Anniversary dinner to highlight 35 years for WLOK

Memphis, TN - (May 14, 2012) - WLOK (1340 AM), the first black-owned radio station in Memphis, will celebrate its 35th anniversary of African-American ownership with an anniversary dinner Friday, May 18, at the Marriott East, 2625 Thousand Oaks Blvd. The dinner will bring together gospel celebrities, dignitaries, and loyal listeners to pay tribute to the local radio station that has become Memphis' leading source of gospel music and news.

 "When WLOK began in 1977, there were many people who didn't believe that a black-owned radio could succeed in Memphis. But 35 years later and we're still here,'' said Art Gilliam, president of Gilliam Communications, Inc.

United Way hasbusy week meeting with elected officials

United Way of the Mid-South’s strategic plan facilitator had a very busy start this week.

Tim Deuitch, Senior Consultant with Strategic Enhancement Group, Inc. is helping our United Way through the process of examining our current work and learning what needs to be done to be even more effective in the future. Orange Mound couple partners with Memphis business to help community

Rev. Reginald J. and Mrs. Mary Tucker have hearts of gold and are getting positive results in the Orange Mound community.

They work with underprivileged youth in the neighborhood and help them to be successful.

Shelby Systems of Memphis has been partnering with the Tucker's for the past 2 years.

Through their partnership, they've been able to build a new computer lab for them.

The lab was competed last month.

Pink tractor to be auctioned off at Relay for Life event in Lauderdale County

This Relay for Life tractor will be one of the items auctioned off during this years Relay for Life in Lauderdale County.  

A Relay for Life team restored this tractor for the sole purpose of auctioning off on May 11th on the Ripley, TN square at the relay event.

It has gotten a enormous response and pictures are taken daily and has made several appearances and has been written up in several local newspapers.

The main goal is to reach out to as many potential bidders to maximize the amount of charity to go toward cancer research.

Gumbo team cooks up winning recipe

Twenty-four teams competed at this year's Variety Club Gumbo Cook-Off during the 20th Annual City Auto Rajun Cajun Crawfish Festival, which was held on Sunday, April 15 in Downtown Memphis. The festival, which is organized by and benefits Porter-Leath, broke new records with 16,150 pounds of crawfish sold in only five hours.

Festival goers enjoyed Zany Cajun Contests, including crawfish races, a crawfish-eating contest, crawfish toss, crawfish-drawing contest and a crawfish bob. Three bands – Lafayette’s Bayou Boys and Memphis-based musicians Webb Dalton and Tout Le Mon provided entertainment while attendees chowed down on buckets of crawfish.

Mel's Angels won the Variety Club - Porter-Leath Gumbo Cook-Off and has shared the winning recipe for fans.

New Memphis Baby Store hopes to reduce infant mortality

Memphis is taking a stand against infant mortality, as partners - including the Shelby County Health Department - had a grand opening Monday for a baby shop that provides the basic needs of women, babies and toddlers in the community.
