'Spear phishing.' It's a scam, not a sport

An evolving scam will have you guarding your name and e-mail address as closely as you protect your Social Security and account numbers.

Paul Stephens, director of policy and advocacy for the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, warned consumers about 'spear phishing.'

"Spear phishing is when a criminal sends you an email that sounds and looks like it’s from a company you have an existing relationship with," Stephens said. "For example, a spear-phishing message might address you by name.

"A message may look something like this: 'Hello Ms. Anderson, Because of the recent hacking incident affecting some Acme customers, we are asking you to visit this website [URL provided] and update your security settings.' The email will try to convince you to bite on the bait and go to that website, and then divulge other information like your Social Security number and credit card number."

Human Trafficking Awareness Street Sign Campaign

(WMC-TV) - Every year in America, 100,000 to 300,000 youth are at-risk of being taken into human trafficking as a slave to be used for sex or labor exploitation.

More than $30 billion a year is made from this exploitation in America. The only way to combat this modern-day slavery is to educate our citizens on ways to keep their own children and the people around them safe.

Over 4,000 people went missing in the State of Tennessee last year alone, but we didn't find 4,000 bodies, so we ask you...where are they? Chances are they may be at risk for exploitation, if we don't do our part.

A Bridge of Hope will be doing another Human Trafficking Educational Street Sign Campaign on Saturday October 6, 2012 from 10:00a.m. - 2:00p.m. The event will be held on the corners of Poplar Avenue and Ridgeway Road in Memphis. Parking will be available in the Regalla Shopping Center in the Ruth Chris Steak House Parking Lot.

Man charged with shooting 91-year-old man

(WMC-TV) - A Memphis man is charged with shooting a 91-year-old man during a home invasion on Poppen near Orange Mound.

Early morning on September 20, 91-year-old Marion Wood was shot in his own home.

Police say Nicholas Ellis came in through an unlocked door, pointed a gun at Wood, and demanded his money.

Ellis and Wood struggled over the gun and Ellis shot Wood one under the left eye.  Ellis is accused of leaving the house with $3,000.

On Wednesday, Ellis was arrested on an unrelated theft charge.  While being questioned about that case, investigators say Ellis confessed to robbing and shooting Wood during the home invasion.

How to shield your smart phone from hacking

How to shield your smart phone from hacking

Cyber-criminals can hack your smart phone just like they'd hack your computer.

A spokesperson for ProtectMyID.com, an identity protection service sold by credit bureau Experian, said one in every seven of those hackers is a friend or relative of their victims. They call that "friendly fraud."

Doesn't sound very friendly to me.

These are user-friendly, though. They are ProtectMyID.com's tips to prevent smart phone hacking:

* Password protect your phone with a unique password. Use different passwords for each online account. The Secret Service recommends passwords with at least eight characters, mixing letters, numbers, symbols and cases.

* When finished, log out of applications that automatically access payment information.
