Here are some tips you can use to help keep mosquito populations in control around your home or business:

  • Wear mosquito repellant which contains DEET
  • Eliminate standing water, which is where mosquitoes can lay eggs.  Such objects that can retain water are old tires, flower pots and drip plates, buckets, tin cans, and children’s toys.
  • Repair or install windows and door screens.
  • Empty and refill pets’ water bowls every few days.
  • Repair leaky outside faucets

According to the Health Department, West Nile Virus is expected to be active in Shelby County for a longer period this year.  The Health Department urges residents to use repellents at all times when outdoors.
