LeMoyne-Owen event to commemorate the Middle Passage

(WMC-TV) - A local college is preparing to educate the Memphis community with an American history lesson. LeMoyne-Owen College will celebrate the 19th annual Middle Passage Commemoration. This event was established by history professor Dr. Randolph Meade Walker.

Walker wanted to give students and the general public an opportunity to take into account the positive contributions of African American laborers throughout American history. This commemorative event will feature a proper examination of the impact African Americans have had on the United States economy.

Church to give 1,200 pairs of shoes to children

(WMC-TV) - The congregation of one South Memphis church will carry on a 20 year tradition that helps give kids a comfortable start to the new school year.

St. Andrew AME Church will hand out more than 1,200 pairs of new tennis shoes to children from across the Memphis area.

The kids will also receive school supplies and free haircuts.

But students won't be the other ones to take something valuable away from the back-to-school shoe giveaway. Parents will be able to receive information about social services, housing and financial counseling.

Church vows to fight gangs

(WMC-TV) - A church will help fight the scourge of gang activity in its community by hosting a workshop for parents and a march down the city's streets.

Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong will be the keynote speaker at Pearly Gate Church, 531 S. Parkway E., on August 11.

Memphis Tourism supports new generation of photographers

(WMC-TV) - Watch out Memphis, there is a new generation of photographers hitting the streets with their cameras. The organization Memphis: Through the Lens of a New Generation just wrapped up their competition and they are set to announce the winner. 

This photography contest is a summer program that encourages the youth of Memphis to examine the city’s history such as the sanitation strike of 1968, the deaths of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Elvis Presley as well as other events that has help to shape the city’s heritage.

Seniors can get free legal advice Tuesday

(WMC-TV) – A pair of heavy hitters in the Memphis business community are teaming up to help senior citizens get free legal advice this week.

AutoZone and law firm Bass, Berry and Sims will work with Memphis Area Legal Services to offer seniors advice on preparing of advance care plans, health care directives, durable power of attorney forms, wills and other legal matters.

The tour kicks off in Clarksville and then roles into Memphis’ Southwind High School on Monday, July 23.

HUD, city work to help Memphians buy homes

(WMC-TV) – Later this month, the city will team up with the federal government to help prospective homebuyers find the house of their dreams.

June is the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s National Homeownership Month. To help celebrate, a Homeownership Housing Expo will be held at the Raleigh Springs Mall on Saturday, June 23 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
