Officials using pesticides to fight West Nile

(WMC-TV) – Shelby County health officials announced Monday that they have found mosquitoes infected with the West Nile Virus in two additional zip codes.

A bite from an infected mosquito can make humans sick. Symptoms of the virus include fever, headaches and body aches that last for a few days. The illness is typically mild, but that’s not always the case.

(WMC-TV)- A local organization hopes to spread the word about mistreatment to older people with “world elder abuse awareness day.” 

According to the Administration on Aging website, the mission of this day is to provide an opportunity for communities by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic methods affecting elder abuse and neglect

The day was created on June 15, 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations.

MCS health program honored by St. Jude

The Memphis City Schools HIV Prevention Project has been honored and recognized by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s SMILE and Link-To-Care Partnerships. SMILE is an acronym for Strategic Multisite Initiative for the Identification, Linkage and Engagement in Care of Youth with Undiagnosed HIV Infections. Under the guidance of MCS Exceptional Children and Health Services and project coordinators Sudie Cushman and Susan Lee, the HIV Prevention Project has been honored for its work throughout middle and high schools, as well as the city of Memphis.

(WMC-TV) – As the mercury continues to climb, more people will be headed to the pool. And while swimming can be fun, it can also be very dangerous.

“We want all of our Shelby County constituents to be safe around swimming pools while having fun,” said Dr. Tyler Zerwekh, administrator of Shelby County Health Department, Environmental Health Services Bureau. “Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental injury-related death in children ages 1-14.”

(WMC-TV) – The Memphis Health Center will receive $3.1 million in federal funds from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Resources.

The Memphis Health Center cares for citizens from Shelby and Fayette County and offers homeless health services, prenatal care and dentistry.

Whooping cough outbreak not current concern for Shelby County

(WMC-TV) – Shelby County health officials say Mid-South parents shouldn’t be concerned by the recent whooping cough outbreak in the western United States.

There were three cases of whooping cough reported last year in Shelby County and there have been five cases confirmed this year, according to the health department.

In response to the recent positive tests of West Nile Virus in sampled mosquitoes, the Shelby County Health Department will conduct truck-mounted spraying (adulticiding) of EPA-approved insecticides, weather permitting, in portions specific ZIP codes according to the following schedule:

Wednesday, May 16 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. ZIP Codes: 38108, 38122, 38128, 38133, 38134, 38135

Thursday, May 17 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. ZIP Codes: 38002, 38053, 38128, 38133, 38135
