City summer camp registration opens Saturday

(WMC-TV) – Memphis kids can enjoy a summer filled with educational and athletic activities and even go on fun field trips if they enroll in the city’s camp.

Registration runs from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, May 12, at all Memphis Community Centers except Bert Ferguson and Hickory Hill. Those camps filled up during early registration.

The city’s summer camps start on June 11 and run through July 27, from 8:30 a.m. until 4:40 p.m. Camps will be closed on July 4.

Teen’s ages 12-17 can learn more about staying safe on the internet at the Poplar-White Station Library branch on Thursday, May 10 at 3:30 pm. Sergeant Len Edwards, of the Commission for Missing and Exploited Children is the guest speaker.

Nine week arts camp starts May 29

Memphis Black Arts Alliance will host its 2012 ARTS-A-F!RE  Summer Camp from  Tuesday, May 29, to Friday, July 27,  at the FireHouse Community Arts Center, 985 South Bellevue Blvd.

Camp hours are 7:30 a.m. until 5:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. Extended care is available from 6:45 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Thirty-five children, ages 9 to 17 from all  backgrounds and throughout the Mid-South region, will have an opportunity to discover black history and the creative impact of blacks on the world and to develop their own creativity. A diverse group of  professional  artists-educators and scholars will guide campers with fun-filled, culturally-inspired activities such as acting, art, music, dance, swimming, gardening, field trips and more.

It’s time to register for Teen Technology Camp 2012 at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library. The application deadline is May 10. Teen Technology Camp begins July 16 and is a week long technology-based Summer Camp for teens aged 13 to 15. The technology camp is sponsored by the Memphis Chapter of the Society for Information Management and the City of Memphis Public Library.

Tennessee Ranks Low in Sexual Health Indicators

Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region urges the Tennessee General Assembly to reject abstinence-only sexuality education and focus on improving the state’s dismal sexual health as conveyed in the report “Sexual Health of Young People in the U.S. South: Challenges and Opportunities,”  recently released by Auburn University at Montgomery’s Center for Demographic Research. 

Tennessee ranked poorly in all the metrics studied in the report, including teenage birth rates, infant mortality rates, sexually transmitted infection rates and condom use.

Bad Dog's Legacy Continues With Charity Run

The John "Bad Dog" McCormack Memorial 5K is coming up on Saturday, April 28th, benefiting Ronald McDonald House of Memphis. 

McCormack used his radio fame to raise awareness & funds for Ronald McDonald House for over 20 years.  The House serves the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital patients & their families.

The race will wind through the streets of downtown Memphis, including around FedExForum & Riverside Drive.

Registration is $25 through April 11th ($5 more after the 11th).
