MCS cafeterias now serving healthier meals

(WMC-TV) – A 13-minute YouTube video is highlighting some positive changes going on in cafeterias across Memphis schools.

The video was produced by a division of the American Egg Board, a group responsible for marketing eggs.

The video shows how Tony Geraci, director of Memphis City Schools’ Child Nutrition Services, has introduced fresh produce into the diet of the district’s 100,000 students.

(WMC-TV) - Former Booker T Washington High School student Christopher Dean will be featured in a new documentary.

The WKNO/PBS documentary is entitled American Graduate: The Tennessee Story.

Tennessee’s First Lady Crissy Haslam will host the half-hour documentary.

Desmond Tutu’s daughter to receive honorary Ph.D from Memphis college

(WMC-TV) – The daughter of one of South Africa’s most famous civil rights advocates will receive an honorary doctorate during LeMoyne-Owen College’s graduation ceremony Saturday.

Nontombi Naomi Tutu, daughter of Nobel Laureate Desmond Tutu, will give the school’s commencement address.

MCS to participate in ‘Let’s Move’ fitness initiative

On Saturday, May 12 at 10 a.m., students, parents and MCS staff will participate in the district’s largest flash mob to be held simultaneously at Halle, Crump and Melrose Stadiums.

Students will also compete in various sporting events designed to motivate them about exercise.

Jay-Z offering scholarships to needy students

(WMC-TV) - You might wonder how at-risk youngsters in Memphis in the Mid-South might benefit via a connection to rap music royalty. Keep reading because Shawn Carter, better known as Jay-Z, wants to offer a bit of his wealth to young people who generally have zero chance when it comes to college scholarships.

Jay-Z's foundation offers help to select young people who want to improve their education and make their own contributions to the community.

Tennessee Ranks Low in Sexual Health Indicators

Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region urges the Tennessee General Assembly to reject abstinence-only sexuality education and focus on improving the state’s dismal sexual health as conveyed in the report “Sexual Health of Young People in the U.S. South: Challenges and Opportunities,”  recently released by Auburn University at Montgomery’s Center for Demographic Research. 

Tennessee ranked poorly in all the metrics studied in the report, including teenage birth rates, infant mortality rates, sexually transmitted infection rates and condom use.
